Regrettably the CNY Regional Envirothon Committee

decided to cancel the 2020  Envirothon amid concerns of

the spread of COVID-19. The decision to cancel the event

was difficult, however, we must prioritize the health and

safety of our students, volunteers and the employees of

the host site.  We look forward to hosting the event next

year.  Thank you for your understanding.

Skaneateles High School team “Gang-Green” represented Onondaga County at the State Envirothon on May 22nd and 23rd at Hobart & William Smith Colleges.  They were awarded 2nd place! Forty-six other high schools around the state participated.  This year’s current environmental issue was centered around the balance of high production agriculture and natural resource management to feed the world.  School advisor Rick Garrett shared a few words about his team and their Envirothon experience: “Once again, thank you so much for the $100 check to support the kids at the State Envirothon.  When I told them about the check, they were excited and I think it made them feel pretty special.  There was lots of nervous talk about the competition and the oral presentation... they were visibly nervous standing in front of a large group on Wednesday night.  Overall we came in 2nd place behind that incredible Ulster County team, so I was very proud of them.  Thank you again for all of the support and please feel free to share this message with all those who supported this donation and these great kids.“

The Envirothon is an environmental education program that is centered on five universal categories; soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry and wildlife. Additionally, every year a different current environmental issue is selected, and a test is based upon that issue.  This year, the current environmental issue was “Rangeland Management” and was quite difficult for participants.  Each of the categories had a station dotted across the trails at Rogers where the students were tested on core principles. The Friends of Rogers Center is a perfect place to hold the event as it features a vast trail system, a great volunteer network, and an inviting Visitor’s Center.

The Envirothon is organized by Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the event is sponsored by several generous donations from area businesses.  The event’s major sponsor is Covanta, a waste to energy facility in Jamesville, New York.

A Brief History:
The Envirothon competition has its roots in Pennsylvania from the early 1980's. By 1990 a National steering committee was created and a working relationship with the National Association of Conservation Districts was established.  That same year, New York State participated in the National Envirothon for the first time.  Since then, Soil & Water Conservation Districts across New York State organized their Envirothon competitions for high school students in their county.  This year's event was held on April 18th at Friends of Rogers in Sherburne, NY.
The CNY Regional Envirothon is a joint effort and partnership between Onondaga, Cayuga, Chenango and Madison County Soil & Water Conservation Districts.
